Gleniffer High School has taken its first step towards the LGBT Youth Scotland School Charter Award by establishing LGBTQIA+ Pupil and Staff Ambassadors to support pupils, parents, and staff in understanding issues the LGBT community face. We’ve had an LGBT group which runs weekly to support pupils for a long time. However, we have now established a staff and pupil committee to ensure that LGBTQIA+ awareness and inclusion is very much one of our school priorities.
The LGBT Charter is a programme that supports schools in developing policies and undertaking training to ensure that their school is being as inclusive as possible. Over the next 12-months, Gleniffer High School’s LGBTQIA+ Committee will be working together to carry out consultations with pupils and staff; to review policies; to update curriculum plans; and to improve visibility and services throughout the school. We will also be running support groups for parents to ensure that they have all the information and support they need to support their child. Our overall aim is to make sure that Gleniffer High School’s LGBTQIA+ community is represented and included in all aspects of school life.
We will continue to update our website with information of our journey and support links for pupils, parents, and staff. For more information regarding LGBT Youth Scotland and the Charter, you can find their website at: https://www.lgbtyouth.org.uk/ and for pupils interested, our Pride Group runs every Friday lunchtime in Dr Winter’s classroom in Science.
